October 19-21, 2012 Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park held Fall Photography Weekend. The above photograph is the "Best in Show." It was taken by Jim Pearson of Madisonville, Kentucky. The weekend hosted 47 participants in three different divisions (point & shoot, intermediate, and masters).

During the summer the forest is alive with nesting birds. If you hike one of the park's trails you will almost definitely hear Carolina Wrens and Eastern Wood Pewees, as well as many other birds. Three species that have been seen almost daily at the park are Wild Turkey, Indigo Bunting, and Red-headed Woodpeckers.READ MORE

Spring Photography Weekend was held at Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park April 20-21, 2012. The weekend consisted of a photography contest divided into divisions for point & shoot, intermediate, and master photographers, with evening programs about photography. All of the photographs for the competition must be taken within the boundary of the state park or neighboring state forest. The park host photography weekends in the spring and fall. Blackberry bushes are blooming througout Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park.
Although the flowering trees have finished blooming there are still plenty of wildflowers to be found at Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park. Blackberry is a little past peak bloom, but many pretty blossoms can still be seen in the area. On the lake trail the following wildflowers were seen in bloom on April 18th :Blue Phlox (past peak), Prairie Trillium (past peak), Wild Geranium (past peak), Quaker Ladies, Small Bluets, Buttercup sp., Dwarf Dandelion, Violet Wood Sorrel, Blue-eyed grass, Dwarf Larkspur, Sweet Cicely, and Wild Ginger. Throughout the park Philadelphia Fleabane, Ragwort, and Lyre-leaved Sage can be seen.
Wildlife observations from the last today and yesterday include: Wild Turkey, Northern Parula, Prairie Warbler (on neighboring Pennyrile State Forest), Midland Water Snake, Cricket Frog, Bluegill, Groundhog, Tadepoles, Red-spotted Purple (butterfly), and Channel Catfish.
