Today marks the first day of autumn and autumn weather has arrived as well. There is a chill in the air and the sun is shining bright making it a great day to pull on a long sleeve shirt and visit Lake Barkley State Resort Park.

A few sumacs and sassafras are starting to ease into their reddish hues, but we should still see the majority of trees change color in the coming weeks. Plenty of color can be seen along the landscape including blankets of purple Mistflower, ironweed, and blazing star plus a few varieties of goldenrod create splashes of yellow throughout the park. A few species of butterflies are taking advantage of the fall blooming flowers and in the last few days Monarchs and Painted Ladies have been seen fluttering about the park.

Fall bird migration is also another reason to come visit the park. Groups of migrants include warblers, vireos, shorebirds, and tanagers passing through the area on their way south. This past week sightings include Black-throated Green Warblers, American Redstarts, White-eyed Vireos, and Caspian Terns. The late season fawns have lost their spots and a few young bucks have been seen near groups of does and fawns. In the early morning hours and evening hours, skunks dot the roadsides feverishly trying to eat before the weather turns cold.

So enjoy the start of autumn and celebrate by making a trip to Lake Barkley State Resort Park.
