The Dog Days of Summer

Okay, so maybe I’m getting a little ahead of myself with the title, but one wouldn’t realize it with the temperatures and humidity that we’ve been having the past week or so. Eighty two degrees with 65% humidity make for some sweltering days here in the bluegrass. The public pool is filled, (and soon to be open,) the campers are out and the park is filled with visitors. Just last night the local kids were all dressed up for the Jr. & Sr. Proms taking pictures at various places across the park. It’s great to see people from around the community making the parks a part of their experience. I’ll never forget my senior prom, all decked out in my double breasted, black tux with white collar. My best friends and I went to eat at a Kentucky state park and then on to school for our last hoorah as high school students. Just so you’ll know, all photo evidence of our “stylish” hair cuts and tuxes have since been destroyed. Some things have changed, we’ve moved on to bigger and better things. Some of those friends went on to become accountants, preachers, and even doctors, but all of them still not only visit Kentucky state parks, but can say that working in the parks and growing up in them led to exactly where they are today.

With that said, get out and support your local state parks! This year at Blue Licks we’ll be providing visitors with opportunities to canoe, experience the Battle of Blue Licks with our Battlefield Walks and so much more. We’re gearing up for our full summer programming beginning May 26, Memorial Day Weekend. With special programs at the Pioneer Museum, live evening performances you’re sure to find something to get you outdoors and make Kentucky State Parks part of your memories. Tell you what, get out to a state park within the next couple of weeks, send me a picture of your adventure and if you're the first one to send it to me, I'll give you a family pass for a canoe trip here at Blue Licks! user posted imageWell, apparently it was me who needed a few more weeks of hibernation. (If that were only true!!) Snow, hail, sever thunderstorms and more have proven problematic for us here at Blue Licks and around the surrounding region. My apologies for delay in updating my blog, of course that’s only taking into consideration that there is someone out there actually following it…..If you are, welcome back and happy Spring!! The old Pioneer Museum is due for a thorough spring cleaning due to a bit of a drainage issue we experienced over the past month or so. No worries, we’ll have it back up and running as soon as we can. Right now, it’s slated to be open Saturday April 7, 2012. If your going to be in the neighborhood then be sure and stop by to say “Hi,” the whole Recreation gang will be out and about preparing for the 11 am Easter Egg Hunt. Children from infants up to 12 years old can join us in our annual Easter Egg hunt sponsored by our friends group, the Blue Licks Commemorative Commission. Over 2000 Easter eggs will be placed in and around the battlefield for everyone to hunt. It is truly an amazing site. We work about 2 hours to place eggs and they are all gone literally in about 5 minutes, but everyone seems to have a great time. We’ll be having 4 different categories: 0-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12. Each category will have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prize eggs. Find the egg, get the prize!! Come on out and join us!

Phlox at the Campground
user posted imageFor all you wildflower enthusiast’s out there, just as I suspected, the warm temperatures and ample rain have created the perfect growing season for all of our spring wildflowers. Phlox, Harbingers of Spring, Trout lilies and more are bursting with color and can be found on nearly every walking trail here at the park. Now they may not be completely native, but the violets are just amazing in the museum lawn. Don’t pass up the opportunity to stop and enjoy these little beauties that many of us take for granted. Simply put, it’s Spring, it’s beautiful outside, and it’s beautiful here at Blue Licks! Get out and take advantage of this fantastic weather!! And don’t forget, stop by with the family for our Easter Egg Hunt this Saturday April 7 at 11am. We’ll see you there!

Spring???

Snow one minute, gone the next,
(Welcome to Kentucky)

user posted imageuser posted imageAs the wind picks up here at Blue Licks today, I’m wondering what weather will be blown in to our area. It turned out Old Man Winters bark was much worse than his bite over the weekend with an original forecast of over 5 inches of snow, only to see sunny skies and relatively warm temperatures. I even headed out on the trails to see what early bloomers might be poking their heads up to greet us. In years past I’ve been amazed at the number of trout lilies that seem to infest the nature preserve over behind the campground. Unfortunately though, it appears to still be a bit too early even for those. While the wildflowers, at least for around here, are not quite ready to say hello, the daffodils in front of the museum are beginning to let us know that Easter is on its way. When I was young, my mother would always call them “Easter lilies,” because they were always an indication that I would very soon be able to stuff my face with all kinds of candy and maybe, just maybe, find that special golden egg my grandparents would put out in their backyard for all the grandchildren to find. I never had much luck finding that special egg, being the youngest of 7 grandchildren. I blame my older brother. But I could always count on Ms. Emma’s “Easter lilies” each year to let me know that Peter Cottontail would soon be visiting. Ms. Emma was our neighbor just down the road who always had a whole hillside of daffodils that my mother and I would stop by and pick a large bouquet of flowers for the house. Not sure if Ms. Emma ever knew we did that, but as far as I’m concerned, she was as much a part of that memory as the flowers were.

user posted image Depending upon what the weather does the next week or so, I would suspect that some of those early bloomers may start appearing. Perhaps those trout lilies will take over the Nature Preserve, maybe even some Harbingers of Spring will start blooming. Meanwhile, why not get some study time in and be prepared for what’s to come. Check out this LINK to the Kentucky Native Plant Society for some great resources to brush up on your plant identification. I’ll be sure and keep you posted on what’s going on here at Blue Licks along the trails the next couple of months. Take care and stop by often!

February's Here!

February 2nd, Groundhog Day. Looks like 6 more weeks of bad weather. Of course that depends on who you’re listening to. Punxsutawney Phil says more winter, Staten Island Chuck says early spring. I myself, to quote the comedic genius of Bill Murray in the movie Groundhog Day, am predicting March 20th as the first day of spring. Call me crazy but maybe it’s not the best idea to take weather advice from a 20 pound rodent. I just don’t trust them, what with that whole black plague thing a few years ago. (Yes, a history joke.)

Well, last weekend proved to be more adventure than winter at the 3rd Annual Winter Adventure Weekend at Carter Caves State Resort Park. The sun was bright enough to dry up most of the recent rains and I believe the temperatures even reached the lower 60’s one of the days. If you didn’t get a chance to make it out you missed a fantastic event. If you’re interested in seeing what you missed, check out this LINK to the photo’s from the weekend, maybe even put it in your calendar for next year!

As promised, it’s time to let you know about our February Dinner Theater coming up next week. The past few years we’ve had the pleasure of working with Fantastical Theatricals out of Lexington Kentucky as the performers for our dinner theaters. They’ve always provided us with quality entertainment that the whole family can enjoy. Murder mysteries and musicals alike, they always know how to have fun. Next user posted imageweeks performance will be what we are calling a Cabereta. Fantastical Theatricals prepare this entertainment just for us here at Blue Licks. They’ll be showcasing musical arrangements of some of their favorite songs from the screen and stage. It’s a perfect opportunity to take your sweetheart out as an early Valentine present, or even bring the little ones along if you prefer. Chef Moore will be providing another fantastic buffet featuring park favorites such as the fried catfish, full salad and dessert bars. Just give our front desk a call to place your reservation, but don’t waste any time because this years event will be one night only Saturday February 11th and it has been known to sell out fast. If you have any question about the show, feel free to email me HERE. Take advantage of the sunshine while you can and check back in next week!

WAW is a Definate WOW!

Tygart's Creek Regretta
user posted imageWell, once again the cold blustery winter weather escapes us and leaves us with a wet goopy mess. However, with the temperatures still above freezing and the roadways clear, it still gives everyone a chance to get out and about. And for the more adventuress at heart, there’s an even bigger opportunity for you! WAW!! What, may you ask is WAW? Winter Adventure Weekend, just down the road from here at Carter Caves State Resort Park offers rope lines, tree climbing, repelling, trail hikes and so much more. You could even sneak in a guided cave tour through X-Cave or maybe even give the world famous Squeezebox competition a try.

Now I have been told that I talk too much about other state parks, but in my opinion, if you can't find what your looking for at one state park, there's no doubt that you can find it at another one. So I view my blog as a chance to let you, the reader, see just what the parks have to offer and see what all there is to experience user posted imagein the Kentucky State Parks. Just don't forget though, Blue Licks has a lot to offer it's visitors and if you keep coming back here, I'll make sure you know just exactly what we've got cooking here at Blue Licks, FYI- Fantastical Theatricals “Cabereta!” in February just for starters, but I'll be letting you know more about that next week! For now though, be sure and check out this LINK for more information on WAW at Carter Caves State Resort Park. Oh, and by the way, I'll be there to so if, by any slim chance your reading this and you wind up stopping by for a fantastic weekend at WAW, say hi, I'd love to see just who all may be following my blog. Have a great weekend!
